I finished A Clockwork Orange last night. After the struggle of the first chapter where I was constantly looking up the Nasdat words, I was absolutely gripped. I found I got used to the language surprisingly quickly and hardly looked up any words after about chapter two.
I can see why this book was so controversial at the time, but found the descriptions of violence tame compared to those in modern books. I actually found this vagueness more harrowing, as it really emphasised Alex’s blasé attitude to really extreme violence. It was clear how violent the attacks had been, further description was unnecessary.
I thought it was a fantastically dark yet witty book, raising some really interesting ethical questions without being overly philosophical or preachy. Not sure how much I’m looking forward to seeing the film though.
